Exit Music (for a film)
wake from your sleep
the drying of your tears
today we escape
we escape

pack and get dressed
before your father hears us
before all hell breaks loose

breathe keep breathing
dont loose your nerve
breathe keep breathing
i can't do this alone

sing us a song
a song to keep us warm
there's such a chill such a chill

you can laugh
a spineless laugh
we hope your rules and wisdom choke you

now we are one
in everlasting peace

we hope that you choke that you choke
we hope that you choke that you choke
we hope that you choke that you choke

Thom
We wrote this for Romeo and Juliet. I saw the Zeffirelli version when I was 13 and I cried my eyes out, because I couldn't understand why, the morning after they shagged, they didn't just run away. It's a song written for two people who should run away before all the bad stuff starts. A personal song.

Thom looked at Shakespeare's original text and tried to incorporate it into the song but he gave up on that quickly. But I still think it fits with the film amazingly well, especially as the lyrics are actually quite personal.

What we've always done is aim ourselves towards other people's music that we've fallen in love with. It's like a lovers' flattery, we try to emulate these people and always fall short. We aim for the stars - and we hit just north of Oxford, ha ha! Like on Exit Music we tried to do a Portishead thing at the end, but it's all really stilted and leaden and mechanical - and it's brilliant! Perfect for that bit of the song.
VOX Magazine, septembre 1997

Exit music is the first song where every note makes me happy.

Presented with a song like Exit Music, it's impossible to know what to add without actually making it worse. How can you play along when it's already there?
Colin
Soundtracks are a bit naff nowadays: they just stick on some contemporary music. We wanted to be a bit more intelligent than that.
